Even though 65% of Americans favor a public option for health care the vote was a landslide against it (15-8 and 13-10). When the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001, more than 50,000 people responded to the call for help by participating in rescue efforts. Eight years later, 90% of these rescuers have not received adequate health care for the cancer, respiratory problems, and emotional problems that have resulted from their heroic efforts. The best way to honor them, and to make sure this never happens again, is to implement a single-payer system that leaves no one out.
